WHAT A WORLD IS THIS? THIS WORLD OF OURS? stops us from small joys and gives us pains beyond endurance. Life is a prison, which you cannot break out of, unless you decide to die. And what you get is neither your choice, nor your dream. You have to accept what life offers. And no doubt life has a lot of joys for us. Yet, it starves us of those joys which could have fulfilled us. People we like. People we love. Are imprisoned in their lives. Caught in their own nets. Can be seen crying in their own systems. The thread strangles the spider, my dear. That is our end. A death full of cravings, for our beloved people, whom we cannot meet in this life! A life worse than death!

WE HAVE NO OTHER OPTION. We must love others. Feel for them. Help them. There is nothing wrong in serving your own interest. But it if comes into clash with others', we must stop and think. Most of the problems in this world are the result of RECKLESS SELF LOVE. We exclude others from our reckoning to the extent of thinking they don't exist. How can you explain the adulterators who are selling spurious goods? We have to sensitize the society about the needs of others, and their right to exist. When we are getting more and more, it is at the cost of others who are getting less and less. CAN'T WE STRIKE A FINE BALANCE? TO GET AS MUCH AS WE NEED AND GIVE AWAY ALL THAT WE GET BEYOND THAT? I WONDER IF IT IS POSSIBLE. BUT IF IT IS, IT WOULD BE THE FOUNDATION STONE OF A NEW EONOMIC WORLD ORDER, A NEW SOCIAL ORDER BASED ON RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER AND A NEW VALUE SYSTEM WHICH WILL GIVE RESPECT TO THE PERSON WHO WORKS SELFLESSLY FOR SOCIETY.

OF LIFE AND DEATH: We are living this life if we are adding to the store of happiness and joy. Life is not simply to be born here, growing up, eating and drinking and tumbling out of it. Nor is death a dead -end to the process of living. We have to recognize what is LIFE AND WHAT IS DEATH. Those people whom we call LIVING AND ALIVE turn into DEATH when they stop feeding the LIFE IMPULSE. When they start living for themselves. When they don't KNOW anything about themselves and about the universe around them. IGNORANCE IS DEATH. KNOWLEDGE IS LIFE. Living with a consciousness is LIFE. Consciousness of WORKING FOR LIFE IMPULSE. Helping others, planting trees, taking care of the aged, spreading good will, thinking well, acting well ALL THESE ACTIONS add to the LIFE IMPULSE. When martyrs are alive even today? Because their DEATH served the purpose of the LIFE IMPULSE. But people who simply lived are gone into the dustbin of time. WHO BOTHERS ABOUT THEM? LIFE IS A PRECIOUS TREASURE. CANNOT BE SQUANDERED AWAY IN IGNORANCE.

PARENTS AND CHILDREN: The relation between the two is of giving and receiving. But a u-turn takes place after some time when the opposite starts happening. Children when they grow up, have to take care of their parents who are growing down. It is very strange. Parents are ready to make sacrifices for their children but the children never think of making any sacrifice for their parents. When they grow up and become parents, they will make sacrifices, again for their children. FOR OUR CHILDREN, WE DO POSSESS A SOFT CORNER, NOT FOR OUR PARENTS WHO HAVE SUFFERED LONG FOR US.

LITERATURE AND SOCIETY: All literary creation has a social parenthood. Reading History of a period gives us a prosaic account of what happened. But literature of that period provides us with a poetic account of what was happening in those times, a living account. What was Victorian England, visit Dickens novels. What was Indian in early 20th century, visit Nanak Singh. Guru Nanak Dev's poetic rendering of Babar's invasion provides a living account of those days. THUS, literature is embedded in society. Literary values cut off from the values of society do not survive long. Nor is that literature of value enough which relates not to society. Every word that is written, every phrase, possess an atmosphere which can be decyphered by a vigilant and keen eye. From a word can be built a whole story about the surroundings, the milieu of a creative work. The circumstances, the conditioning atmosphere, go into the making of a work, whether knowingly or otherwise. It is not possible to look at a work in isolation. It has to be related to the biography of the writer, to the history of the times, and also to the chemistry of the social milieu, in order to reach at its meaning.

WHO EXCELS IN LIFE? Those who play foul and hit below the belt? Those who make short cuts? Those who just manouvre things? I wonder. Let us look into the lives of successful people. The most important ingredient of their character was HARD WORK coupled with CONVICTION. They were HONEST PEOPLE. All these qualities make us REALISE THE VALUE OF LIFE. There are people who make it to popularity charts but in a few days, someoe else takes their place. It is EASY TO REACH THE TOP, BUT IT IS DIFFICULT TO STAY AT THE TOP. ONLY GOOD PEOPLE, WITH A STEADFAST MIND, CLEAR CONVICTIONS, HARD WORK AND INTEGRITY manage to stay on the TOP.

WHAT MAKES OUR SOCIETY SO UGLY? Fighting, hatred, discrimination, leading to bloodletting - make the face of our society a horrible spectacle. Why is not man at ease? Why is not man at peace? The essential unit to live in this society is FAMILY. ALL DEPENDS ON HOW WE CONSTITUTE THE FAMILY. The whole trouble and turmoil have their beginning in the human mind which is shaped in the human FAMILY. I sometimes wonder what our education down the centuries has taught us. We are most casual and careless in selecting partners. What matters for us is [i] caste [ii] social status of the family [iii] standing of the relatives [iv] landed and other property [v] income [vi] living standard [vi] the boy or the girl. WE ARE GOING TO MARRY TWO SOULS BUT WE BEGIN WITH THE CASTE AND END AT THE BOY OR THE GIRL. WHEREAS, IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE OTHER WAY ROUND. THE MOST IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION IS THE BOY, OR THE GIRL, AND THEIR MENTAL MAKE-UP AND THEIR MATCHING. CASTES, CREEDS, PROPERTY, EDUCATION -- EVERYTHING MUST TAKE THE BACK SEAT. BUT FOR WE PEOPLE, MARRIAGE IS A SOCIAL NECESSITY, AN ADJUSTMENT AND WE BREATHE IN ALL OUR WISDOM TO MAKE A MARRIAGE. WITH WHAT RESULT? EVERY BODY IN EVERY FAMILY IS BLEEDING. WHERE ARE HAPPY FAMILIES? WHERE ARE HAPPY MEN? WHERE ARE HAPPY WOMEN? WHERE ARE HAPPY AND HEALTHY CHILDREN? OUR FAMILY SYSTEM IS A LOPSIDED AFFAIR. SO IS OUR LIFE. SO IS OUR SOCIETY. A BLOODY SOCIETY FULL OF HATRED, DISCRIMINATION, FIGHTING, WARDS AND DESTRUCTIVE IMPULSES. IF WE WANT A BEAUTIFUL SOCIETY, WE HAVE TO RETHINK AND RESTRUCTURE OUR SOCIAL SYSTEM, OUR FAMILY. CONSIDERATION MUST BE GIVBEN TO THE INDIVIDUAL OVER SOCIETY. DR. ANAND

How to lead a good life? My answer is Good Life simply means living in such a way that you create goodwill around. Selfish living leads to the play of negative forces which kill positive atmosphere. If the mind is full of intrigue, there can be no peace in such a mind. Moreove, such a mind makes the living of others miserable. We have to learn the art of good living from people who have an inclination for doing good to others. Andrew Carnegie, the steel king of America, believed that one must earn as much as one can upto the age of 35. Thereafter, one should start spending it, on the society from where this money has come. And by the time, one is dead, there should not be a penny left in one's account. Noble thinking and he lived this ideal. Every thing that you have belongs to society. Keep it as much as you need, and share the rest with the people around. You will live a happy man and die a happy spirit. There is no other way to lead a life of happiness. Dr. Anand

FOR THE VISITOR'S ATTENTION AND RESPONSE: SELF-EXAMINATION How unimportant I happen to be! A ROLE-MODEL to no student A Friend to no neighbour Even those I loved Gave me more than they received from me I shall be known Only as my son's father That too for a generation lone The fire shall consume Not my body alone But my total being instead And my name shall live only in the account books of the holy or unholy men sitting along the banks of the Ganges!
